Saskatchewan Suite December 28th
What We Are Attempting To Do:
This is the most novel, ambitious, progressive, and challenging project in the history of the Regina Jazz Society and indeed, ever in all of Saskatchewan. No one has ever attempted to do what we’re about to do.
The Regina Jazz Society Corp. is attempting to tell the 150+ year history of Saskatchewan in music and in the vernacular of jazz, by offering one of Canada’s most talented and brilliant writers and composers, Fred Stride to produce a Commissioned Work to tell this story that includes all of us. This will be similar to what we developed in 2006 at Casino Regina, following publishing the only published story of Jazz in Saskatchewan, namely, “The Jazz Province: the story of jazz in Saskatchewan”, written by acclaimed Saskatchewan author Ken Mitchell, as part of our Centennial Celebration in 2005.
This will take place in the form of a concert at Casino Regina on Saturday, December 28, 2019. Like in 2006 for the Casino Regina concert then, we will bring back all the best current local musicians living in SK and ex-patriate musicians to perform this brand new Commissioned Work, telling our Saskatchewan Story musically, for the very first time ever.
This will be the best possible Superstar Big Band ever assembled in Saskatchewan in our history and it’s not humanly possible to imagine all these great players ever again sharing the same stage in our lifetimes or anytime for that matter. These are the kids that have grown up here, got their musical start here and then been exported to every corner of the globe or they’re players who have come here to live, teach, and perform because Saskatchewan affords them that grand opportunity.
And What Is The Saskatchewan Story: Well it’s your story, my story and stories of everyone living here and all those that have gone before us. Its 150+ years of stories that include everything from the thundering hoofs of the buffalo, when there were virtually no inhabitants here at all. It tells the story of how people arrived here. You’ll hear the train whistle bringing all the various settlers and immigrants to Saskatchewan. It will be important to hear the clash of cultures initially, but even more importantly the inclusiveness of the society we live in here today. One will hear the sound of winter and the wind howling and biting you at -50 with the crunch of snow and the soft quiet nights of summer with the cool refreshing breeze and depending where you’re located, maybe the sound of frogs croaking, crickets chirping, and the sweet messages of the songbirds we have.
You will hear that we’re farmers, business people, potash workers, railroaders, hockey players, story tellers, writers, artists, and soldiers marching off to war. We’re all the Saskatchewan Story and that’s what the “Saskatchewan Suite” is all about and will tell us for the very 1st time ever. No one else has attempted this creative work and story, but you’ll be able to hear this all at Casino Regina on Saturday, December 28, 2019.
Now never having attempted anything remotely close to this, we’re considering what options we can provide to those interested in supporting this novel Saskatchewan Story and seminal performance of the work created for this event.
All donations for the Saskatchewan Suite will be tax deductible and you will receive an official tax receipt from the Regina Jazz Society Corp. Additionally, there are sponsorship opportunities and packages available to participate as a contributor to the Saskatchewan Suite and Concert. These will include many different opportunities for recognition of your support and contribution to this great special event including being listed in the official program, signage, and many other items. These can be provided readily upon request or on our website: www.jazzregina.ca
In Conclusion, the Regina Jazz Society is a not-for-profit organization that has been promoting Jazz in Regina since 1977 and became incorporated as a Non-Profit Organization in 1989. Our mandate is to encourage, to promote, and to provide a forum for the appreciation of the diversity of jazz music for musicians and enthusiasts alike.
The Regina Jazz Society also presents and promotes JazzFest Regina – an annual event that is rapidly growing and expanding. 2019 was the 11th Annual event and most successful in our history so far, presenting many, many, great performers. We’ve already started work on JazzFest Regina 2020 which we believe will be even more successful, yet.
Special Projects: Regina Jazz Society in 2005 as part of Saskatchewan’s Centennial, published the book: “The Jazz Province: the story of jazz in Saskatchewan”, written by acclaimed Saskatchewan author, Ken Mitchell. In 2006, we then put on a concert at Casino Regina. “The Jazz province: a celebration in music”, which featured an all-star big band made up entirely of current and expatriate Saskatchewan jazz musicians, (just like we’re proposing now), and told the musical story of the book we published for the Centennial.
The upcoming “Saskatchewan Suite Project”, on Saturday, December 28, 2019 as “The Greatest Jazz Concert In The History of Saskatchewan”, will be an hour long commissioned work for a big band of local and expatriate Saskatchewan musicians (just like in 2006), that tells the story of Saskatchewan in music over the past 150 years from a jazz perspective.
Future Plans: Our plans are to continue to make Jazz in Regina and JazzFest Regina a major artistic, cultural, and economic event in Regina and Southern Saskatchewan. Our plans for the coming year and events will be to bring in a greater quantity and more top quality artists from throughout Canada and Internationally. The more support we receive the more we’ll be able to give back to the City of Regina and area.
The Saskatchewan Suite Project December 2019 Program – A Saskatchewan Jazz Tribute written exclusively for Saskatchewan with all local or expatriate Saskatchewan Jazz Musicians in honour of Canada’s 150+ Year Celebration. Many local Award Winning players will be on the stage.
We thank you for this opportunity to discuss these valued opportunities of growing our vibrant community and our Sponsorship Packages will also be on our website www.jazzregina.ca
We hope to hear back from you at your earliest convenience.
